Each year US News releases a ranking of the best national universities in the United States. While these are some of the most competitive programs in the country, Synocate students were admitted to these schools at a rate 3.3 times higher than their peers!

Case Studies

JR, Caltech

JR came to us with an interest in science, but no activities to show for that. We worked on his weakness in English, planned SAT and SAT II tests, helped him secure an internship at UCLA with a professor, and worked with him on all of his college applications. He was accepted to several Ivy League schools and is attending Caltech, where he is majoring in the subject we helped him find in 10th grade.

What We Did:

  • Developed a timeline for SAT/SATII tests
  • Gained a research internship at UCLA
  • Helped JR enter the California State Science Fair (he placed 1st)
  • Draft and edit application essays
  • Chose Caltech as best fit acceptance

Focus Area: Essays

10th grade

JR did not enjoy writing at all and scored below 500 on the SAT critical reading section the first time he took it. We gave him strategies to improve and practiced writing with him.

11th grade

JR eventually began scoring A's in class, We focused on his ability to articulate science concepts to science fair judges and in scholarship essays. We submitted work to 10+ scholarship organizations.

12th grade

We guided JR through the application process. His improved writing was a major factor in his acceptance at several Ivy League schools. JR and his counselor decided that Caltech was the best place to continue pursuing his passion in physics.

Focus Area: Activities

10th grade

JR was involved in a Jazz band and key club, but his activities had no major theme. We helped him gain the confidence to try new activities in his area of interest including science fair, research, and computer science.

11th grade

We helped JR narrow down his interests and secure an intership at UCLA doing physics research that he then submitted to the California State Science Fair where he won 1st place. We also helped him start a physics club at his school.

12th grade

We refined JR's theme using our "one sentence approach" to help him identify the activities that mattered most to him as an applicant. He submitted a peer-reviewed research paper which formed the basis of our applications.

Focus Area: Academics

10th grade

JR had not taken the SAT, so we helped him develop a plan for when to take the test, how to balance his time, and also helped him select the best tutor to improve his test scores. We also helped JR decide how many AP courses to take.

11th grade

JR continued working with his tutor and we developed a plan to take the SAT three times. We also finalized JR's academic plan for high school and helped him improve his time management skills.

12th grade

We refined JR's theme using our "one sentence approach" to help him identify the activities that mattered most to him as an applicant. He submitted a peer-reviewed research paper which formed the basis of our applications.Due to his high level of preparation JR was able to score a 2340 on the SAT and three perfect 800's on his SAT II subject tests. He also continued exploring his interest in physics and ultimately decided to major in physics at Caltech.

RT, UCLA

RT came to us with an interest in business and a 1700 on the SAT. He was a rising senior and was unsure where he should be applying. We helped him form a school list, build a story, and edit his college admissions essays. We helped RT identify his passion for international business, which he is currently studying at UCLA.

What We Did:

  • Developed a college list
  • Application essay outlining and editing
  • Positioning a low SAT and high GPA)
  • Refining interest to focus on international business

Focus Area: Essays

September

RT had not chosen any colleges, so we helped him form a plan for how many and which colleges to apply to. We used his Academic Index, GPA, SAT, and our proprietary data insights to narrow down the options.

October

We first develpoed the theme of RT's essays using our one sentence approach, then helped guide him through the Common Application, supplements, and short answer responses.

November

We continued working with RT to help polish his essays. RT was accepted to his reach school (UCLA). Given his low academic scores (3.5 GPA, 1700/2400 SAT) the essays were a key factor in his standing out from other applicants.

Focus Area: Activities

September

RT had travelled internationally and was interested in business. He mentioned these interests separately in casual conversation, and his counselor saw the link and helped identify RT's passion for international business.

October

We went through RT's list of activities to help determine what to highlight in his applications. We then grouped his strongest three together to support RT's stated interest in international business.

November

Despite his busy schedule, RT was able to complete 15 applications (with the UCs counting as 1) because of his focused theme, consistent meetings with his counselor, and time management tips from the Synocate team.

Focus Area: Academics

September

RT's academic profile was below average for most of the schools he was considering. We worked with him to determine where his academic strengths were so we could highlight that on his applications.

October

We helped RT tie his academic strengths to some activities he did in 11th grade around international culture. We also prioritized RT's school list based on his academic profile to help maximize his chances of admission.

November

Based on his acceptances, financial aid, and our conversations with RT and his parents, we helped them choose UCLA.

LM, Columbia

LM came to us with an interest in entrepreneurship, computer science, and the environment. He was a sophomore at a local high school but had recently moved from another country and his parents were looking for guidance. He was motivated and his parents sought our support early on. We helped him discover his passion and ultimately gain acceptance to his dream schools.

What We Did:

  • Matched LM to 25 schools including Columbia
  • Provided Financial Aid guidance
  • Positioning for top 10 schools specifically
  • Identifying specific interest in entrepreneurship

Focus Area: Essays

10th grade

LM was a weak writer so we helped him identify some useful writing exercises to develop his ability. We also helped him apply to 3 different programs with a focus on energy.

11th grade

As his interests became more clear, we began to develop LM's college list. We helped him apply to 5 summer programs leading to him attending MIT Launch.

12th grade

We helped LM finalize his college list and identify schools as safety, target, or reach. We also worked with LM to get an early start on his essays so he could have them all completed by November.

Focus Area: Activities

10th grade

LM was starting fresh without any extracurricular activities on his resume. We helped him identify his interest in entrepreneurship and select a range of activities to try out. This lead to LM joining 3 school clubs, 2 out of schools activities, and 2 volunteer activities.

11th grade

We helped LM narrow down his list of activites and focus on the ones that mattered most. For LM, that meant the activities that supported his passion for energy entrepreneurship

12th grade

We worked with LM to help him highlight his accomplishments for his teachers while they were writing letters of recommendation. We also helped LM identify 3 competitions to enter. During this year LM was awarded the Presidential Volunteer Service Award.

Focus Area: Academics

10th grade

LM was not familiar with the AP system and had many uncertainties regarding which classes to take. We helped him develop a three year academic plan and identify which subjects were good candidates for additional tutoring.

11th grade

We monitored LM's grades to ensure he stayed on track to be competitive at top schools. We also helped him plan for his SAT/SATII tests and find tutors to help maximize his scores.

12th grade

We advised LM to take the ACT to hedge against the SAT and helped develop a plan to balance LM's academic commitments with his busy extracurricular schedule and the significant workload necessitated by an ambitious application plan.

Matching

The best counselor is someone who understands your goals and motivations. Beyond their knowledge and professionalism our counselors are carefully matched with each student based on specific criteria such as interests and personality.

1-on-1 Advice

Our low student-to-counselor ratio provides you with the individualized guidance that is needed for college admissions, yet is hard to find with other counseling companies.

Quality

Expert Counselors

It shouldn't be hard to find good advice, but sometimes it can be hard to separate the real experts from the fake. We've taken great pains to build the best-qualified team of counselors available so that you can be confident you're getting the right advice. We've done the research, crunched the numbers, and given our findings to the counselors so that you can get the information you need when you need it.

Online meetings allow us to recruit the most talented counselors. Unlike other companies our pool of counselors is not constrained by geography, which allows us to be more selective in our hiring. With billions of people in the world, why limit our options?

Our counseling team consists of former admissions officers, seasoned college counselors, and graduates of top universities like Stanford, Harvard, and UC Berkeley. They have expertise in fields such as engineering, computer science, medicine, business, humanities, and more. Every counselor undergoes a rigorous review process to make sure they meet our criteria for experience, interpersonal skills, and passion for education. Only ~10% of applicants are accepted.

After being accepted, new counselors are trained by senior management following a curriculum that introduces them to the Synocate program, teaches them to properly leverage Synocate's resources, and covers the most important insights from our team of former admissions officers. Senior management also hosts a biweekly meeting with counselors to cover timely topics in admissions and address common roadblocks that students may face.
